Our Values

The UKVIC Culture

Our values, like the values of the artform, are centred around collaboration, deep listening and mutual respect, as well as nurturing our relationships with each other and the wider world - both human and more-than-human.

These values are embedded in the way that we endeavour to work together as a team, are also woven into the culture of our events, and are the bedrock of our vision which we hope to transmit to the world.

  • Care: We promote the wellbeing and self-care of the team and of everyone involved in our events and carefully consider the safety of the spaces we create.

  • Listening: We aim to listen actively and deeply to ourselves, others, and the environment around us.

  • Authenticity: We are committed to speaking and acting from a place of grounded and rooted authenticity which is honest and aware.

  • Playfulness: We appreciate the joy and levelling connection that comes from play, laughter and silliness.

  • Adaptability: We are responsive to our community and our own needs and feel into our aliveness when we make decisions and run our events. We are not afraid of changes - we are improvisors after all!

  • Reflection: We invite slow time and organic unfolding of decisions and plans, taking our time to learn the hard stuff and integrate self-reflection and feedback from our participants.

  • Plurality: We embrace diverse perspectives, acknowledge the complexity of being human and are deeply curious about shared leadership and how to honour all our voices.

Our Safer Spaces Policy

At UK Vocal Improv, we are committed to creating safe, inclusive and welcoming spaces that are free from judgement, harassment and discrimination, and in which everyone is treated with dignity and respect. We believe that everyone should be able to fully engage in vocal improvisation and that everyone has the right to be welcomed and encouraged. We are aware that we are in a cultural evolution towards this radical inclusion and that we are all learning.

To support this we have established this Safer Spaces Policy.

We acknowledge that the vocal improvisation world in which we operate is a creative arena in which freedom of expression and human connection is at the essence of what we do. While we believe singers must be free to express themselves, it is unacceptable to exacerbate or reinforce discriminatory or harmful behaviours or views. UK Vocal Improv makes every effort to work with artists and facilitators who share this ethos, and our expectation is that the content and work shared in our spaces is done so with love, care and without malicious intent.

We all play a role in maintaining and growing a welcoming space for our community, and with that in mind we ask that you read and acknowledge the following code of conduct in full when engaging with UK Vocal Improv events to help us keep the spaces safe for every participant. We acknowledge that we too are growing with this.

Who is this policy for?

This policy applies but is not limited to the following: the organising team, facilitator team, performers and participants. This policy is included as part of our employment contracts and our terms & conditions when purchasing tickets.

Where does this policy apply?

This policy applies across all UK Vocal Improv managed events; in workshops and social spaces; and online while engaging at virtual events, via email or social media.

This document is a guideline, it should change as we learn and grow. It should tell you what you can expect from UK Vocal Improv and what you commit to as part of the UK Vocal Improv community.

To ensure that all attendees feel comfortable and respected, we have implemented the following Safe Space Policy:

1. Respect: We expect all participants to treat each other with respect and kindness. This includes respecting each other's boundaries, experiences, and identities.

2. Non-Discrimination: Discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated at our event. This includes discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, or any other characteristic. This includes in improvised lyrics, improvisation which does not include lyrics but may infer information, as well as in social spaces between workshop sessions.

3. Consent: Consent is paramount in all interactions. Vocal improvisation can blend with other practices and include movement/touch. It is also a space where subject matter is created on the spot. Before you touch anyone or discuss sensitive topics, ask if they are comfortable with that. Participants must obtain explicit consent before initiating any form of interaction that may affect another person's comfort level. Don’t assume your physical & emotional boundaries are the same as other people’s.

4. Be aware of your privileges: including less obvious or invisible hierarchies. Think about how your words, opinions and feelings are influenced and who they might exclude or harm. Be aware of equality of singing space and allow space for all singers to express themselves.

5. Accountability: If anyone witnesses or experiences behaviour that violates this Safe Space Policy, we encourage them to speak up and report it to the designated support person(s) of the events. We are committed to addressing concerns and taking appropriate action to ensure the safety of all participants.

6. Support: We are committed to providing support to anyone who feels uncomfortable or unsafe during the event. Designated support person(s) are available to assist with any issues that may arise.

7. Learning: We strive to create a learning environment where participants can grow and develop their skills in vocal improvisation. We encourage open dialogue and constructive feedback while maintaining respect for each other's perspectives.

By participating in UK Vocal Improv events, we all agree to abide by this Safer Space Policy and contribute to creating a positive and inclusive atmosphere for all attendees. Together, we can foster a community that celebrates diversity, creativity, and mutual respect.

If there are issues around inclusion and/or safety, we intend to address this in a restorative fashion, with an understanding that we are all learning.

If you have any questions or concerns about this policy, please don't hesitate to contact the event organisers.

When we work together in this radical and transformative way, we are creating the change we wish to see in the world.

Thank you for helping us create a safe and welcoming space for vocal improvisation.
